2011 NOMAR/Dillard University Housing Fair

Thanks to the Affordable Housing Committee, NOMAR Staff, and our Housing and Community Partners, the NOMAR/Dillard University Housing Fair was a great success!

On Saturday, July 23rd, NOMAR hosted its 3rd annual Housing Fair and partnered with Dillard University to hold it on their campus. We had over 65 exhibitors, 25 sponsors and hundreds of attendees.

Our REALTOR members actively participated by volunteering, exhibiting, teaching workshops and including their listings in the 1st Gentilly Open House Tour!

Defining Affordable Housing

Affordable Housing has various definitions that stem from several different sources. However, the common theme within each definition, is an assertion that housing should cost no more than 30 percent of a family's income.

Families who pay more than 30 percent of their income for housing are considered cost burdened and may have difficulty affording necessities such as food, clothing, transportation and health care.

An estimated 12 million renter and homeowner households now pay more then 50 percent of their annual incomes for housing. The lack of affordable housing is a significant hardship for low-income households. A hardship that contributes to weakening the fiber of our neighborhoods and communities.

Affordable Housing at NOMAR

NOMAR believes Affordable Housing is a driving force in improving the dynamics of every urban and suburban area. With the work of the NOMAR Affordable Housing Committee, NOMAR members stay up to date with the latest public programs that help clients who are in the Affordable Housing market.

The Affordable Housing Committee also hosts an Annual Housing Fair, open and free to the public, where REALTORS® have an opportunity to engage community partners and members about affordable housing opportunites.

The Affordable Housing Committee works throughout the year to carry out a strategic plan that connects NOMAR members, community partners and potential buyers around the issue of Affordable Housing. Ultimately, the efforts of the committee is to help future home buyers to one day achieve the “Dream of Homeownership”.
